"Unconstitutional" military operation during G8 summit causes anger in Germany

Berlin: Even the so-called moderate in Berlin politics were upset about more than unusual proceedings and executive happenings during the G8 summit last week in Heiligendamm. Two „Tornado“ bombers of the German Air Force cruised several times over the area allegedly only for shooting detailed pictures. At least one time they crossed a camp with thousands of demonstrators near the small village Reddelich, so deep „you could see the rivets“, demonstrators said.(1)

Actually only one man caused the political debate about this event. When political activists reported about it, neither the mainstream media nor the gouvernment took notice.
Not before the directly elected lawmaker Christian Ströbele (Green Party) started an official request the ministry of defence admitted the operation.(2)

„When military warplanes also deployed in Aghanistan doing reconnaissance over political demonstrations, that is way across the line of any technical support for police actions“, Ströbele said.
He declared the military operation by the German Bundeswehr as „unconstitutional“ and announced to take the issue to the Constitutional Hight Court of Germany.

„This is a provocation“, Rep.Dieter Wiefelspütz (SPD) said and warned the Minister of Defense, Franz Jung (CDU), not to cause trouble in the coalition government.
He pointed out that the police could have done that work by helicopters and remarked a certain „lack of political instinct“ by Jung, who is a strict conservative and proposed a change of the German constitution „Grundgesetz“ for military enforcement against political unrest or terrorism several times already.

„The Minister of Defense is twisting the constitution“, Winfried Nachtwei (Green Party) remarked and pronounced to bring the affair before the Committee on Defense of the German lower house „Bundestag“.

„The demonstrators were no Taliban“, Niels Annen of the Social-Democrats (SPD) said.
He suspected the intention of some CDU conservatives to pull over the constitutional border between military and police. (3)

Some political observers in Berlin calculate with an end of the coalition government of Angela Merkel (CDU) and SPD this summer.
In terms of figures that could happen any moment, SPD, the Green Party and the Left have a potential majority in the Bundestag.
