Washington: Karl Rove, the adviser to US President George Bush once called his „brain“ (1), is going to resign.
„I just think it‘s time“, he announced today in „Wall Street Journal“ (2) and most of the people on the planet Earth finally agree with him.Rove was a political consultant almost exclusively for US Republican candidates (3).
Rove‘s election campaign clients have included George W. Bush (2000 and 2004 presidential elections, 1994 and 1998 Texas gubernatorial elections), Senator John Ashcroft (1994 US Senate election), Bill Clements (1986 Texas gubernatorial election), Senator John Cornyn, Governor Rick Perry (1990 Texas Agriculture Commission election), and Phil Gramm (1982 US House and 1984 U.S. Senate elections).
He was also the Chairman of the „White House Iraq Group“ in 2002 and 2003 and the architect of a strategy for publicizing the White House‘s assertion that Saddam Hussein posed a threat to the United States. The task force‘s mission was to „educate the public“ about the threat posed by Saddam and „to set strategy for each stage of the confrontation with Baghdad.“
The White House Iraq Group was „little known“ until a subpoena for its notes, email, and attendance records was issued by CIA leak investigator Patrick Fitzgerald in January 2004, a legal move first reported in the press and acknowledged by the White House on March 5, 2004.(3)
Rove was involved in blowing the cover of ex-CIA agent Valerie Plame, as he was involved in many corruption and political scandals.
On August 2 Rove refused to testify in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee during the committee‘s seventh hearing on the Justice Department‘s firing of US Attorneys.
Patrick Leahy (D-VT) expressed disappointment at Rove‘s absence, adding that Rove „refuses to tell this Committee the truth about his role in targeting well-respected U.S. Attorneys for firing and in seeking to cover up his role and that of his staff in the scandal.“ (4)
Rove had been designated by White House Counsel Fred Fielding as „immune“ from congressional subpoena because he was an „immediate“ adviser to Mr. Bush (5).
