North of Iraq, Kurdistan: Today the Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gül, who is likely the next Turkish President, supported the ongoing intrusion of Iraqi territory by Iranian Forces.
„Unfortunately, terrorists have the ability to operate in Iraq‘s north due to a power vacuum in Iraq,“ Gül told a press conference after talks with Iraqi Sunni Vice President Tariq al-Hashimi in Ankara.
„They pose a threat to Turkey as well as to other neighbors. Therefore, every country has the right to defend its borders and take legitimate measures for its own security,“ Gül said. (1)Yesterday Radio Utopie reported about joint military operations by Turkish and Iranian forces and secret intelligence and military assistance of Turkey for the Iranian regime of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad during this intrusion.
Also there were reports about an 700 million $ offer by Royal Dutch Shell for the Tawke oil fields near the Turkish Border.(4)
Some websites presume that the Iranian attack against Iraq is about camps of the PEJAK (PJAK, „Party for Free Life in Kurdistan“) militia in that region. But so far the Ahmadinejad regime declined to comment on reasons for this high-risk operation in US controlled Iraq.
On April 18, 2006, US congressman Dennis Kucinich sent a letter to US president George W. Bush in which he expressed his judgment that the US is likely to be supporting and coordinating PJAK, since PJAK is based in Iraqi territory, which is in practice under the control of US military forces.(5)
In November 2006, journalist Seymour Hersh in The New Yorker supported this claim, stating that the US military and members of secret services in Israel are giving the group equipment, training, and targeting information in order to create internal pressures in Iran.
Hersh in his article „The Next Act“:
„In the past six months, Israel and the United States have also been working together in support of a Kurdish resistance group known as the Party for Free Life in Kurdistan. The group has been conducting clandestine cross-border forays into Iran, I was told by a government consultant with close ties to the Pentagon civilian leadership, as `part of an effort to explore alternative means of applying pressure on Iran.` (The Pentagon has established covert relationships with Kurdish, Azeri, and Baluchi tribesmen, and has encouraged their efforts to undermine the regime`s authority in northern and southeastern Iran.) The government consultant said that Israel is giving the Kurdish group `equipment and training.` The group has also been given `a list of targets inside Iran of interest to the U.S.` “

Yesterday Iranian troops penetrated at least five kilometers into Iraqi territory in Haj Imran district located in the Qandil (Kandil) Mountains, causing massive material damage. Local officials in the region talked about a „full-scale war“ and dead civilians.
While US military spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Christopher Garver still couldn‘t confirm the ongoing attacks yesterday five Kurdish officials said troops had infiltrated Iraqi territory and fired on villages. Kurdish officials mentioned the possibility of a confrontation that would draw in Iraqi and US forces. (2)
Some reports say villagers fled their homes after some members of PEJAK came to their village and told them to leave the area.(1)
A so-called „Association of Muslim Scholars in Iraq“ (AMSI) in Iraq, whose near to PEJAK, raised charges against the Iraqi „Government“ (3).
Neither there was any reaction from the US or the Iraqi Government, nor from any other NATO government to this affair.
