Ich habe in der Vergangenheit viele Male gewarnt, falls wir Nasser und den arabischen Nationalismus zerstören, würden religiöse Kräfte nach vorne kommen. Statt eines Kampfes zwischen rationalen Feinden, die einen vernünftigen Frieden schließen können, wird es zum Beginn eines religiösen Krieges kommen, der per definitionem irrational sein wird und keinen Kompromiss erlaubt.

IN ONE word: Bravo! The news about the reconciliation agreement between Fatah and Hamas is good for peace. If the final difficulties are ironed out and a full agreement is signed by the two leaders, it will be a huge step forward for the Palestinians – and for us. There is no sense in making peace with half a people. Making peace with the entire Palestinian people may be more difficult, but will be infinitely more fruitful. Therefore: Bravo!

I ALWAYS thought this a specifically Israeli trait: whenever a scandal of national proportions breaks out, we ignore the crucial issues and focus our attention on some secondary detail. This spares us having to face the real problems and making painful decisions.

FIRST, AN apology: I am not going to write about the Wikileaks. I like gossip as much as the next (wo)man. The leaks provide a lot of it, interspersed with some real information. But there is nothing really new there. The information only confirms what any intelligent person could have worked out already. If there is anything new, it’s exactly this confirmation: the world is really managed the way we thought it was. How depressing.
